This stunning original artwork captures a pair of Twenty-Eight Parrots (Barnardius zonarius semitorquatus), a subspecies of the Australian Ringneck, as they eagerly await a feed at the iconic Mundaring Weir Hotel in Perth. Native to the forests and woodlands of southwestern Western Australia, these vibrant birds owe their name to their distinctive call, which sounds like "twenty-eight."

The Twenty-Eight Parrots are predominantly green, adorned with a striking yellow collar at the back of their necks, a sleek black head, and vivid blue cheeks. Renowned for their adaptability, they thrive in a variety of environments, including urban spaces—such as the flocks that gather around the Mundaring Weir Hotel.

Creating this piece was a joy, as I explored the intricate greens of their plumage and the rich purple-black tones of their heads, bringing them to life with coloured pencils.

The original artwork took over 60 hours to complete and is hand drawn in lightfast coloured pencils (Faber Castell Polychromos) on artist quality paper (Strathmore 300 Bristol) so it will last a lifetime. The background is airbrushed with acrylic paint to create a soft, yet realistic backdrop to make the birds pop.
