Hi! I'm Michelle. I live in Western Australia where I create my art pieces in coloured and pastel pencil, watercolour and acrylic, on paper.
I've always been arty, encouraged by my mum. She would often find me in the yard with a sketchbook and pencil drawing leaves or trees. Although art was my best subject in high school, career and life took me in other directions. I returned to art in 2009 taking weekend watercolour classes with a local teacher through to 2015.
In early 2022, I picked up coloured pencils and started drawing as a way of finding peace and stillness when my mum became ill. Since then, I've continued with coloured and pastel pencils, teaching myself through trial and error, and inspiration from the web, and local artists.
I'm inspired by Australian nature, the beautiful world around me, and the details which I think are so often overlooked. I'm happy in the bush, meditating on the sounds of birds and the wind through the trees, and I love capturing the beauty of that environment on paper, whether it be the swirls and textures in wood, the softness of feathers and colourful plumage, or a gnarly bird’s beak.
The drawing, colouring, layering and blending process often take many mindful hours. My aim is to grab the attention of the viewer with detail, drawing them in for a closer look and wondering at how it was created. I love watching and overhearing viewers at shows, moving in to take a closer look, while saying "I can't believe it's not a photo”.
I exhibit and sell my works at local art awards and shows, and from this website, and has been recognised across Australia and the world.
My future in art is open to whatever happens. For me, it’s truly not about the outcome but the journey; I’m satisfied creating it, I believe the image is there in the paper for me to reveal, If I can share the love I put into each piece with others, then I’m happy.
